Everybody is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago

Published on March 11, 2022

From Irish Dancers to the famous Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe band, along with hundreds of floats and bands participating in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, the event is sure to be a great  time. The parade starts at 12:15pm at Balbo and Columbus.

But, if you can’t attend that one, no worries. Chicago has two parades! Head south where another celebration is taking place on Sunday starting at noon, at 103rd and Western Ave. in Beverly and Morgan Park.

If you’re up early, stop by the river to watch the annual tradition of dyeing the river green.  Starting all the way back in 1962, the Journeyman Plumbers Union have used an eco-friendly  vegetable based green powder to turn the river a vibrant Kelly Green color.

After the city festivities have wrapped up, you may be ready to indulge in some Irish pub fare.  Maybe a couple of pints with a side of fish and chips? Loads of cozy Irish ubs and breweries are waiting to welcome  you. Here are our  recommendations:

Chief O’Neill’s Pub

If you’re looking to get away from the crowds downtown, this place is a good option on the Northside.  They are consistently rated one of the best Irish pubs.  This weekend, they’ll have live music and dining specials available all weekend with a buffet of favorite Irish dishes.  And don’t forget your pints of stout, ale or lager. Call for details and reservations.

O’Shaughnessy’s Public House

The very best of what an original Irish pub could’ve looked like. A custom-built wooden bar that evokes a kind of a 19th century Irish pub. With a friendly staff, plenty of beer, curry fries and traditional breakfast directly from Ireland, this is a must visit pub.

Barney’s Callaghan Pub

On Chicago’s Southside and with beautiful handcrafted wooden interior structure and details, this Irish pub is as authentic as it gets stateside. Packed with locals on weekends, it gives you a cozy feeling of fraternity. Enjoy a well-poured Guinness while listening to authentic Irish music from the frequent entertainer that perform. Cash only.

D4 Irish Pub & Cafe

If you’re looking for something a little closer to the parade route, try D4 Irish Pub & Cafe.  Bringing the slightly more upscale flavor of Dublin to Chicago, with a modern take on Irish favorites on the menu and specials planned for St. Paddy’s Day.

This weekend, hit the city, go down to the green river, and immerse yourself in Irish culture, the fun, and the bounties of St. Patrick’s Day.
