Pi Day: Indulge in a 3D pie chart!

Published on March 14, 2022

It’s Pi-Day! It’s the perfect day to  fill your belly with – you got it – pie! Here are some great Chicago options.

You can thank physicist Larry Shaw for this delightful annual holiday. When he came up with the idea, he was on a work retreat in 1988 with his employer, San Francisco’s Exploratorium: Museum of Science and Technology. According to his daughter, Sara Shaw, her dad was always trying to combine crazy and fun ideas with math and science to make them more engaging. She said, “It’s a celebration of and a coming together of everybody to enjoy something that is based in science, but in a fun, educational way.”

To commemorate this fun holiday, here are a few of our personal picks for delicious pie to enjoy.

Hoosier Mama Pie Co.

You can’t celebrate Pi Day without thinking about Hoosier Mama Pie Co.  Pies are their specialty, afterall.  The pie of the month is Mexican Chocolate Chess Pie.  But you can also get a variety of other pie options at this local legend.  Maybe try the Passion Fruit Meringue Pie.  Or try something completely different, like the Fat Elvis (Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Banana in a graham cracker crust.  If you really like living on the edge, try the Chicago Sunrise Pie (Tart Grapefruit with Malort and a whipped cream edge).  You could also play it safe – and kill two birds with one stone – by picking up some savory pies for dinner, such as Cheddar Brat or Moroccan Lamb hand pies.

Vanille Patisserie

Vanille Patisserie is joining the Pi-Day celebration by offering a Butterscotch Cream Pie, Banana Cream Pie, Apple Streusel Pie, and Nutella French Silk Pie.  Sounds amazing, but how do you decide? At Vanille Patisserie, you don’t have to choose, simply order The Pi Day 4-Slice Sampler and you can taste the delicious goodness of all their pies! Located at 2108 N. Clark St.

Bittersweet Pastry Shop

This pastry shop goes all in with their Door County Sour Cherry and Lemon Meringue Pies.  They are waiting for you at 1114 W. Belmont Ave.

This Pi Day, make math fun AND fill your belly with unforgettable flavors!
