Farming In Chicago, Pulling The Plow To The Market

Published on March 24, 2022

Tired of the hectic pace of the city? Imagine being surrounded by green fields, cute animals, and farming lots of fresh and delicious food. If you would like to experience farming side of Chicago, then travel to the agricultural and rural areas.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, in April 2019 Illinois had 72,000 farms that generated more than $19 billion in revenue during the month. The state conditions are perfect for growing many agricultural products, like soybeans, and corn; in which Illinois is a leading producer. Other products are wheat, oats, fruits and vegetables, as well as Christmas trees.

This hard work results from a rich tradition of family farms and orchards. Some are open to the public and have activities such as petting farm animals and visiting pumpkin patches. You can also enjoy farm-to-table meals like freshly made cheese, or stocking up on seasonal produce from farmers’ markets.

Where to go farming

If you venture into a 2 hours road trip to Patyk’s Farm Market and Greenhouse, you will enjoy fresh homegrown produce, handmade milk soap, and farm-fresh eggs, among other things. You can also spend some time with friendly farm animals, and learn more about native flowers on the Little Mom and Pop Farm

Or, if you’re looking for a children’s environment, you can’t miss visiting the Enjoy Pioneer Farm located in Hampshire, IL. Kids can hold goats, ducks, and baby lambs while learning about how hens make eggs and how a real farm produces food for the community.

If you don’t have the chance to road trip far, don’t worry, we have other ideas for you. You might want to visit The Urban Canopy, an urban farm on the south side of Chicago. Founded in 2011, the organization is pioneering in the local food cycle to create a sustainable and equitable food system.  Together with growers, distributors, composters, and community members, they seek to positively impact the city’s environment, people’s health, and the local economy.

Where to market

Thanks to the community efforts, Chicagoans have access to local, sustainable food from farmer’s markets. By visiting those located across the city, you can enjoy fresh and local products. A classic is the Daley Plaza Market, the longest-running market located in the center of The Loop. Another good one is Green City’s Market, which rotates locations in Chicago, and offers different educational programs.

Agriculture and farming activities are not just the basis of human development, but also part of American cities’ attractions. Chicago is an example of how good farming techniques, citizen interests, and commercial and legislative intentions, can lead to educating people about the nutrition of their food, where it comes from, and how it got to their plate.
