Per tradition, thousands will congregate at Navy Pier where the New Year will be greeted with 10 minutes of fireworks. Prior to midnight, you can check out the Winter Wonderfest, and several of the pier’s restaurants—Bar Sol, Lirica, Margaritaville, and Harry Caray’s Tavern—all have special events planned for the occasion.

Is there any family-friendly activity more synonymous with autumn than going to a pumpkin patch? In addition to being able to choose the perfect pumpkin for turning into pies or jack o’lanterns, these farms are mini-amusement parks featuring dozens of rides and attractions for youngsters, and restaurants with classic American comfort food.

Although Chicago is a sprawling metropolis, its abundance of park space means there are plenty of places to have a picnic, even in its most crowded areas. While virtually all of the city’s parks can serve as a great place to spread a blanket out, eat, and enjoy a day in the sun, we’ve chosen these based on location and things for the kids to do. We’ve also chosen restaurants and markets within walking distance to get food.
